How to set up Selene

Selene is the Bitcoin Cash wallet we recommend. It's free, it's open source, and only you hold the keys. Setup takes about five minutes.

Selene makes a new wallet for you right away and asks you to save your recovery phrase, a list of words that is the key to your money.

Write your recovery phrase on paper

Write the words down in order, on paper, and keep it somewhere safe. Not a screenshot, not an email, not a note in the cloud. Anyone who has these words has your money, and if you lose them and your phone, nobody can get it back for you. Never type them into a website, and never give them to anyone who asks. No real support person ever needs them.

Get your address

Open the screen to receive money. You'll see a QR code and your address, which usually starts with bitcoincash:. That's what you give people, or paste into an exchange, so they can send you Bitcoin Cash. It's safe to share.

Put a little in, and pay someone

Buy a little Bitcoin Cash and send it to your address (how to buy), or have someone send you some. To pay, scan their QR code or paste their address, enter the amount and confirm. It shows up on their side in seconds.

Good to know

  • See it in your money. In the settings you can choose which currency your balance is shown in, and show it in sats if you like (100 million sats make 1 BCH).
  • New phone? Install Selene and import your wallet with your recovery phrase. Your money comes right back.
  • Keep spending money on your phone, not your savings. Same as you would with a real wallet in your pocket.
  • Keep the app updated.
